The mist over the Kigezi hills usually brought a chill, but for sixteen-year-old Brighton Twinomujuni, the real coldness came from anxiety. It was the beginning of the third term of Senior Three, and while his classmates were arguing about football, Brighton was staring at his worn-out canvas shoes.
His mother, a hardworking peasant farmer, had spent the last week trying to sell a portion of their meager bean harvest. It wasn’t enough. The school fees for Senior Three were short, and Brighton knew the devastating routine: any day now, his name would be called over the intercom, and he would have to pack his small bag and walk home.
Brighton didn’t want to walk home. He wanted to be an engineer. He wanted to build bridges that could withstand the heavy southwestern rains. But poverty is a fierce current, and Brighton was tired of swimming against it.
A Knock on the Door
Just when the shadows seemed longest, hope arrived in a simple khaki envelope. The local council chairperson had connected Brighton’s mother with the Ntahobari Cares Initiative.
The Initiative didn’t just offer a temporary patch; they offered a lifeline. Recognizing Brighton’s sharp mind and resilience, Ntahobari Cares stepped in to sponsor his education, clearing his Senior Three arrears and committing to walk with him all the way through his advanced levels.
But they didn’t send him just anywhere. They secured him a place at Kigezi College Butobere—the legendary “Siniya”—a school known not just for academic excellence, but for molding boys into gentlemen of substance.
Entering the Gates of Siniya
Stepping through the gates of Butobere was a turning point. For the first time, Brighton wasn’t looking over his shoulder wondering when the bursar would send him home.
- In Senior Four: With his mind at peace, Brighton thrived. He spent his evenings in the library, his nose buried in physics and mathematics textbooks. When the Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) results were released, Brighton’s name was in the coveted Division One.
- The Transition to High School: Ntahobari Cares didn’t step back. True to their promise, they renewed his sponsorship for Senior Five and Senior Six, ensuring he had the proper uniform, mathematical sets, and pocket money.

The Leader in Senior Six
By the time Brighton reached Senior Six, he wasn’t just a recipient of charity; he was a leader in the school. Wearing the smart, distinctive uniform of a Butobere A-Level student, he served as a peer mentor to the younger boys.
Whenever he met a Senior One or Senior Two student staring anxiously at the school noticeboard, worried about fees, Brighton would sit them down under the eucalyptus trees.
“Take heart,” he would tell them. “Do your part in the classroom. There are people out there, like Ntahobari Cares, who believe that your background shouldn’t define your destination.”
During his final UNEB exams in Senior Six, taking Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM), Brighton sat in the exam hall with absolute calm. As he flipped open the paper, he muttered a quick prayer of gratitude for his mother, for Butobere, and for the faceless, kind-hearted people at the Ntahobari Cares Initiative who had looked at a struggling boy in Senior Three and seen a future engineer.
The Legacy of Care
Today, Brighton is awaiting his university admission letters, but his story is already a victory.
Through the Ntahobari Cares Initiative, a cycle of poverty was broken on the hills of Kigezi. He entered Kigezi College Butobere as a boy carrying the heavy weight of uncertainty, and he left it as a confident young man ready to build the very bridges he used to dream about.
